The Town of Sisal

                                              The Town of Sisal

Sisal is a seaport town 30 miles northwest of Merida in the State of Yucatan, Mexico. During the beginning of the 1800s, the people of the city of Merida were transporting all export and import materials to a place far away in the Port of Campeche. The people of Merida petitioned the Spanish Government for a port nearer to their own city for easier access.  By Spanish royal decree the new port of Sisal was founded in 1811.  After this port was built and the Mexicans got their freedom from Spain, exports from this new port doubled. This was the main port of the Yucatan during the Henequen boom, which made the Merida area very wealthy.

Remember the old days when people used real rope?  Remember when it was called “Sisal rope”?  Well, it was called “Sisal rope” because it was shipped out of the port of Sisal here in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.  Nowadays, the world mainly uses synthetic materials for rope, but the little pueblito of Sisal still lives on. It no longer ships Sisal rope all over the world, but it is now a fishing town, eco reserve for birds and it has spectacular beaches.

The town has approx. 2,000 residents most of which are in the fishing industry. As of 2006 the Yucatan’s State government has been working on restoring the old splendor of this little fishing town, including the rebuilding of the original town dock of years past.   The local people can now fish and stroll on this restored dock.  They even have concerts during the summer right on the dock and you can buy chips, salsa and beer at the Consorcio’s Restaurant which is right on the beach in front of the dock.

This friendly local population offers a great combination of recreational and sport activities.  The town itself is a quiet and relaxing place where you can walk around its streets. If you do decide to stay in the town, you need to visit the real Spanish fort built to protect the village from pirates in the 17th and 18th

century.  You can also see many canons decorating the main square plaza.

In town, you can take a wetland tour to go bird watching.  Many species of winter birds come to these waters especially in the shallow estuarine and ponds.  The place was declared a State Natural Park for migratory birds. For those of you who like to fish, you can hire a local to take you fishing for snapper, grouper, mackerel, snook, sea trout, tarpon and other species of fish.

Sisal also hosts other winter birds named Canadians who have been coming back year after year to enjoy this town and its weather.  Come and join us where you too can enjoy this quaint town and its beaches.

The Emeral Coast and Merida

The Emerald Coast and Merida

The Emerald Coast is one of my favorite places to relax, take in the warm weather and friendly Mexican atmosphere. Who can resist the cool white powder sand, the tranquil beaches, the tropical vegetation and its warm waters which are so inviting? Not me, that’s for sure.

Seafood and authentic Mexican Restaurants abound throughout this coastline.  I especially like the traditional Yucatecan Cuisine which is so rich in flavors and colors.

My husband has always wanted to live on the coast since he was a young man.  He enjoys fishing, diving and other boating activities, so the Merida Coastline is the perfect place for him.  He enjoys swimming at the beach and he also likes taking a boat out to relax on the waves or just fish all day.  And he always returns with fish for dinner, usually some Grouper which is very abundant in this area. And best of all the people who work on the boat will clean the fish for you, so all you have to do is pull out your favorite recipe, cook up a storm and have a glass of wine.

We also enjoy the privacy this area offers.  It is not overrun by tourist and there are no hustling and bustling crowds. We may have liked it when we were younger, but we are now in a different stage in our lives.  Here things are taken easy, and the way of life is much simpler.

But every now and then when I do get a little anxious, and I need a dosage of city life I know that I can just jump in my car, and 25 minutes later I am in Merida.  Lovely Merida!

Not many people know about this spectacular city, yet it is one of the most modern, cleanest and beautiful cities in all of Mexico.

Merida has great shopping for clothing, furniture and groceries.  It has hotels, and an International Airport which has flights from Houston and

Miami.  The Mexican and Mayan cultures are joined together as one here in this rich historical area of the Yucatan.

It is a great place to visit especially if you have family in town.  There are just so many things to do.  You can visit archaeological sites which abound in this area.  Swim or scuba dive in a Cenote (underground water caverns).  Take the kids to a city park or maybe to the local zoo.  And adults, when you want to get away, try out one of the historical Haciendas which have been converted into Hotel-Spas. After a relaxing day at the Spa, have a romantic dinner at a fabulous restaurant in the city, personally we like Trotters.  You will not run short of evening activities either, take in a jazz concert, or a musical, or maybe even an opera at Merida’s famous theatre which is located in its historical center around “El Zocalo” (the main square).

What can I say, the best way to experience the Emerald coast and Merida is to come over and visit.  We hope to see you soon in the Yucatan, Mexico.

If you are coming anytime soon, please let me know so that we can set up an appointment to view some of the properties we have on the market. And please visit our website to see our new listings on the Yucatan Peninsula.

The Costa Maya

The Costa Maya (Mayan Coast) is a small Caribbean tourist region in the State of Quintana Roo, Mexico, located a 4 hour drive south of the popular tourist destination of Cancún, and just an hour north of the Belizean border. The area has grown quickly after the construction of a large pier in 2001 to accommodate cruise ships docking from all over the world.

Cruise ships can easily be seen from the town of Majahual (ma-ha-wall) which is 2 miles from the cruise ship port. Majahual is a Caribbean coastal town which has white powder sand beaches, grass thatched palapas roofs, and a coral reef just off-shore, as well as several bars, restaurants, and shops. When the cruise ships are in port, the town is bustling with cruise passengers enjoying the festive atmosphere on the Caribbean shores of Mexico. And when they are not in port, go ahead and relax with the friendly locals.  Take advantage of the Real Estate prices for oceanfront on the Costa Maya while they are still affordable.

Featured property listing!
